Split on the evening Simple Minds performed this month (Photo: Simple Minds Official)

Rock band Simple Minds have today posted a behind the scenes video from their time in the Croatian city of Split where they performed a free concert on Žnjan beach earlier this month.

The video from Split is the first of a new series of tour diaries from the band’s drummer Cherisse Osei. Cherisse starts the video diary at Žnjan beach before showing fans how they spent the day in Split.

The diary then goes on to show behind the scenes footage in the lead-up to the concert, as well as at the concert which nearly was cancelled due to rain and thunderstorms.

“We had lightning and plenty of rain prior to the open air show in Split. For some time it looked as though the show might have to be cancelled. Bad weather is a serious issue after all and those in charge of events have a lot of responsibility re crowd safety etc. In any case, the audiences who come to see Simple Minds are generally loyal. It is tremendous how they encourage us despite standing sometimes for hours in even very stormy weather. The audience in Croatia did just that. We thank all of them for keeping positive throughout,” Simple Minds said after the gig.

“It has been more than 8 years since we last played in Split, we certainly hope that we do not have to wait so long again to perform in Croatia.”

Haute Couture Fashion Comes to Makarska

A historic first Haute Couture fashion show has been held on the breakwater on Makarska’s Riviera on the Dalmatian coast.

The high-end fashion show, produced by academic product designer Olya Sookie, was attended by several hundred spectators.

The breakwater in Makarska was transformed into a unique fashion runway, shrouded in wonderful natural scenery, which emphasized the ambient concepts of the show itself.

“In cooperation with the Makarka Tourist Board, we decided to create something quite spectacular and uncommon in this community and judging by the response we got from spectators we have delivered on our promises, to bring a dash of the international fashion scene here to Makarska,” Olja explained.

The event started at 9 pm with a short video produced by Boris Luetić from BitPit Productions and kicked off a new and exciting chapter of Nephilim.

The show was officially opened by Klara, a dance member of the group Crowd Control from Split. Her spectacular performance put a spell on the audience and showcased a new custom made Nephilim dancing costume designed especially for this occasion.

Following Klara, the runway was taken over by stunning models that left everyone present, breathless. Fluttering dresses, futuristic makeup and carefully contrived music background, emphasize and contribute to the very name Nephilim – the fallen angels.

As a true treat at the end, Makarska’s most successful model, Kristina Šalinović, took a walk on the runway and enchanted everyone present. Every girl was greeted by thundering applause as they walked out, one by one, and yet ovations of the crowd during défilé felt amazing and unexpected.

“I am very happy and proud of the final result. Efforts of the entire Olya Sookie team really paid off, especially when we saw delighted faces of our audience. There were quite a few tourists present at the show. You could see, they were charmed and surprised to see this type of event taking place in Makarska. It was another one of the many goals that we set before us, to show the world that we are a wonderful tourist destination, offering fun and unique content for everyone to enjoy,” Olja said.

“The creative team that we gathered for the event was made up of young and talented people from all over Dalmatia. It was a wonderful opportunity to see them work together and showcase what they are capable of.”

“Many have recognized this event and supported it. The entire event was sponsored by the Makarska Tourist Board, Apfel company, MG Balloon, BitPit and Keune Croatia that provided gift packs for all models. A special thank you goes to Hotel Osejava that opened its doors and provided space for organizers, models, hair and makeup artists and everyone involved in this event. We are grateful that they tolerated us and all the glitter we left on the floor.”

Some serious thought has been put into turning this event into a long-lasting tradition, and a highly successful first event has made the team motivated and determined to make next year’s event even greater.

Olya Sookie and Kristina Šalinović

“Already we are planning next year’s spectacle, so don’t be sad if you missed us this year, there will be plenty more chances to enjoy the magic of Olya Sookie Fashion Event!”

It was opened in 1954. It was designed by Kazimir Ostrogović, an architect who is the author of many remarkable projects, including the City Hall, the City of Zagreb, the Ruđer Bošković Institute Building, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Zagreb, the Villa “Zagorje” and many others.

Oceans 8

The auditorium can accommodate about 500 visitors.

Top European Film Director Ruben Östlund to Receive Award in Motovun

Ruben Östlund

One of Europe’s most intriguing filmmakers of today, Swedish film director Ruben Östlund, will be joining the crowd at Motovun Film Hill this summer in order to receive Motovun Film Festival’s Maverick Award, given to authors whose individual approach, free spirit and innovation have expanded the horizons of filmmaking.

Less than a year after his film The Square won him a Palm d’Or in Cannes, numerous other awards and an Oscar nomination for Best Film in Foreign Language, MFF will have an opportunity to honor this author who has climbed the Olympus of the international cinema at only 44 years of age.

Motovun Film Festival starts this week (Photo: Julien Duval)

Motovun Film Festival regularly screened his films as they came along. Ever since Play, the first of his films to be shown at our festival, which won him Motovun FIPRESCI Jury’s award. Three years later – another Östlund film in Motovun and another FIPRESCI Award. That time it was Force Majeure. As we have not had an opportunity to present the awards to him personally, this year’s Maverick is but a logical recognition to an author whose work has been in the focus of our festival throughout his career.

Ruben Östlund’s films are very accurate anthropological studies of the modern Western life paralyzed with fear from different people and cultures. He is obsessively focused on all sorts of conformism: in a society, in a group, when facing violence. By examining social classes, immigration and democracy, Östlund analyzes the dark side of the seemingly ideal Scandinavian societies, showing the fragility of their true nature based on political correctness and adherence to conventions and unwritten rules of behavior.

The Square

In Östlund’s opinion, people are primarily copycats: they imitate each other and are reasonable to the extent allowed by the social situations they face and by their own expectations in them. No wonder Östlund never planned to become a director of narrative films. He spent most of his 20s making ski movies. Only relatively late in his life did he enroll a film school, with the intention to focus primarily on documentaries.

In his film Play (2011), he used the true story about a Gothenburg child gang systematically abusing and robbing other kids to analyze extraordinary human features – the inclination to group violence and the tendency to become passive observers when in public places. As for Force Majeure (2014), which premiered in Cannes and won him wide acclaim, Östlund deals with one of the commonplaces of the contemporary gender theory – “the crisis of manhood”.

Play

All this led to Östlund’s greatest triumph so far – The Square, the last year’s winner of a Palm d’Or in Cannes and a certain future classic of the world cinema. This so very entertaining and so very politically incorrect film is made up of a series of separate absurd episodes mocking the modern “high art”, media and world of marketing.

The Square is based on the eponymous installation artwork conceived and made by Östlund in cooperation with Gothenburg-based professor Kalle Boman. It was originally installed in the Southern Swedish town of Värnam. It is literally a square in a public square. All those who enter the square have equal rights and duties. The square was conceived as a sanctuary, a place in which we seek and receive help. Based on this, Östlund made his film that addressed the same issues.

Honoring our guest, an identical installation artwork will be made in Motovun by Östlund’s long-time associate, set designer Josefin Äsberg. As the square is an installation testing people’s readiness for solidarity and mutual trust, it will be a challenge and a social game for the festival visitors.
